Tragedy struck on Berryessa Road last year, as San José Police Department officers responded to a serious traffic collision involving two vehicles. According to the SJPD's official statement, a 2007 beige Honda sedan collided with a 2015 black Ford SUV last Wednesday. The incident, resulting in San José's 48th fatal collision and 50th traffic death for the year 2023, highlighted a grim trend for the area's road safety.
With three adult males inside, the Honda was struck as it traveled westbound through the intersection of Berryessa and Piedmont Roads. The Ford SUV, holding a family of four, was moving southbound on a green light, SJPD's initial investigation found. The aftermath was chaotic; the driver and one passenger of the Honda fled the scene, leaving behind one unconscious male, whom responders later rushed to a local hospital with severe injuries.
Last Saturday, the forsaken passenger of the Honda succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. This unfortunate event marked another loss on the city’s streets and the continuing toll on the community's collective heart. Details regarding the victim and the circumstances of the crash remain under San José Police Department scrutiny.
The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office is responsible for releasing the identity of the deceased. Meanwhile, Detective DelliCarpini of the SJPD's Traffic Investigations Unit calls upon the public to provide any information that might aid the ongoing investigation.
