Charlotte was thrilled to help with her best friend's upcoming surprise birthday party — and even more excited to be put in charge of baking the cake, despite never baking a cake before. First, she needed inspiration. She immediately hopped onto the internet to examine photos of beautiful, intricate cakes. She chose a cake that was seven layers, each layer a different color of the rainbow. Then, Charlotte went shopping. She found all of the ingredients to make the cake, double-checking that she had the correct amount of flour and sugar. She also purchased food dye in every color for each of the cake's layers. Next, Charlotte brought the ingredients home and got to work.
Everything seemed to be going satisfactorily until she began to pull the layers out of the oven. Her red layer turned out pink, her yellow layer was too light, and her indigo layer resembled mud. She also found that her blue layer was too thick, and her green layer was too thin. Charlotte came to the conclusion that no one should bother making their own cakes at home and should simply purchase them from a bakery instead.
So Charlotte tossed out her cake and called a local bakery that often posted well-designed cakes on its social media page. Then, she emailed the bakery a photo of the cake she wanted to replicate. Finally, Charlotte picked the cake up and brought it to the party, making sure to keep the cake on a level surface during the drive. Charlotte's friend was so surprised at her party, and the icing on top was seeing her friend cut through her cake so that she and all of her guests could see the perfect rainbow layers.
